The Passing of Proposition 8 in California Kills Same-Sex Wedding Business
Totally missed this story from last week: The New York Times reports on how businesses in California that depended on same-sex weddings took a hit when Proposition 8, the voter-approved gay marriage ban, passed.
Everyone in the wedding industry is affected, from florists to tuxedo rentals to caterers to bakeries to card shops. Says a florist: “I have done a gay wedding every week, and so it’s very disheartening, because other business is very slow.”
What a paradox: The Republican party line is to lower taxes because supposedly excessive taxation hurts businesses and slows growth, but then they muscle in legislation whose repercussion is to hurt businesses.
