Tater Tot Chili Pizza at Grinders Pizza on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives [video]
We're not ashamed to admit it: we like the Food Network's Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Regardless of how we feel about Guy Fieri and his Poochie-likeness, the show celebrates the depth and wealth of the independent restaurant scene across America.
We watched part of a marathon Food Network ran this weekend, and one of the standouts was Grinders Pizza in Kansas City, Missouri. Some of the pizza there is... creative to say the least.
One of the pizzas, the Bengal Tiger, is topped with tandoori chicken, pesto, real crab, hearts of palm, cilantro, and cheese. We liked Guy Fieri's description of the pizza: "That's like an all-calypso jazz band festival funkalicious rock concert... delicious." A nod to New York City, the Goldberg, is topped with smoked salmon, cream cheese, capers, and pesto.
But most awesome is the Famous Chili Bowl Pie: the pizza pie has a hole cut out in the middle and is then filled with tater tots, chili, Cheese Whiz, and scallions.
