Making Fish Sauce on Extreme Cuisine with Jeff Corwin [video]

Saturday night, Food Network aired the pilot for Extreme Cuisine with Jeff Corwin. Jeff Corwin is best known as the host and executive producer of the Animal Planet shows The Jeff Corwin Experience and Corwin's Quest — no stranger to a camera, Corwin comes off a pretty affable and knowledgeable guy.

The pilot, set in Thailand, is basically a fusion of Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern and No Reservations — cue the requisite larvae and insect consumption. As derivative as it is, a lot of the show wasn't all that extreme, and some segments turned out to be sort of informative. We learn about blood cockle harvesting, the pig roasting technique of the Tran Province, and finally, making nam plaa aka fish sauce at the renown Young Star factory. Who knew pineapple was used to make fish sauce?

But hey, the show's alright, hopefully the Food Network will put in an order for a full season.
