'The Organization Of Batter' by Martha Friedman at the Wallspace Gallery [food art]
Currently on display at the Wallspace Gallery in New York City is the exhibition "The Organization Of Batter" by Martha Friedman. Her work often employs common objects such as food (pasta, eggs, cantaloupes, etc), and here the focus is waffles, built out of marble, paper, and rubber. Related is the giant seven-foot Waffle on view at MetroTech Center in Brooklyn through September 2009.
The title of the show, "The Organization Of Batter," is of course, a play on words — in the exhibit it's clear that she's examining the "matter" of things and the medium of sculpture by creating an incongruity by placing a lowly waffle on a marble pedestal. The marble waffles, cast from various antique molds, take the food out of their edible context, and through that, they become transformed into design objects, almost religious artifacts.
The Organization Of Batter runs through May 16, 2009
