Beard Award for Best TV Food Segment: CBS News Sunday Morning's "In a Pinch" [video]

At last night's Beard Awards for media, the winner in the "TV Food Segment, National/Local" category was CBS News Sunday Morning's "In a Pinch," with host Martha Teichner. CBS beat out Chicago's ABC 7 News Friday Night Special, "Hungry Hound," and ABC News's Nightline segment "Platelist."

In "In a Pinch," the camera visits Per Se and talks to David Burke about fancy salts, we get to see an interview with Mark Kurlansky, and we're given some important historical context! We guess it helps when the host talks to us like we're eight years old, there's kind of that 1980s Mister Rogers' Neighborhood vibe going on:

Did you know that 100 years ago, salt shakers were practically non-existent? That was before 1911 when Joy Morton began adding an ant-clumping agent to salt. before Morton's ad agency thought up the little umbrella girl, and the slogan "When it rains, it pours." The very idea of tiny, perfectly white, uniformly-sized salt crystals — this was a revolution. But as so often happens with revolutions, now a counter-revolution has begun.

Our spy at the awards tells us that the whole room — or at least his whole table — "was laughing kind of cruelly at how inane the clip was that they showed."
