Psycho Donuts Riles Mental Health Advocates

Left: Psycho, right: Manic Malt

Mental health advocates are protesting outside Psycho Donuts, a new doughnut shop in Campbell, California (outside San Jose) for its choice of name, saying that it denigrates the mentally ill, reports Mercurynews.com, the protestors going so far as handing out "stigma-free" doughnuts to customers headed into the store. The Psycho Donuts website shows that they do have a bit of a theme going on (a padded cell and "nutcase art" serve as decoration), but the gist is that the donuts themselves are crazy and different, or in their words, taken to "the next demented level."

The shop's owner responded on his blog, asking people to have a sense of humor:

If our donuts are crazy, does that make us insensitive to the mental health community? Is El Pollo Loco insensitive to Crazy Chickens? Was Patsy Cline being hurtful when she wrote the song Crazy? Is it insensitive to call a donut bipolar? We might be insulting the flour inside of that very sensitive donut, but let's agree on one thing: donuts are not people...
