Pharrell Williams Loves Cupcakes More Than Diamonds [video]
Here's an interview from Vernissage with Pharrell Williams at Basel Switzerland regarding his collaboration art piece with Takashi Murakami and Jacob the Jeweler "The Simple Things" that features jewel-encrusted consumer objects — a cupcake, a bag of Doritos, a bottle of Heinz ketchup, a Pepsi can, a sneaker, a condom, and a bottle of Johnson's baby oil — that sold for $2.8 million.
Pharrell Williams really, really loves cupcakes:
I took seven items that I cherish... but for me, these things are the glue to my personality. So we chose precious metal from the earth and precious stones to help illustrate the metaphor of value...
For example, cupcakes. I love cupcakes. And yes, this is precious gold and multi-colored diamonds. The whole project is 26,000 stones.
But the irony and the twist of it, the poetry of the project is that no matter how good that looks to people, for me, the taste of cupcakes is worth far more than diamonds could ever be.
