Saveur: The Only Major Food Magazine With a Blog?
In an interview with Fishbowl NY, Saveur publisher Merri Lee Kingsly revealed part of Saveur's secret to success — while all other magazines are crashing and burning, the high-end food title is seeing a retardedly great 22% ad page growth. And piggybacking on their success, Saveur's expansion plans for the summer include a website revamp:
We're relaunching our Web site in August and adding an aggregator as part of the site. We'll be the only food magazine Web site with an aggregator because it's more about the user at Saveur.
We're thinking that Kingsly is using "aggregator" as a fancy word for "blog," long a dirty word among magazine professionals. And the food mags put that aversion to blogs into practice: Gourmet doesn't have one, Bon Appetit has three, but they're only updated once every few days, and while Conde Nast online property Epicurious has the regularly-updated Epi Log, it doesn't have a print counterpart. So whoa: Saveur kinda sorta will be the only major food magazine web site with a blog. It's 2009!
Update: A tipster reminded us that Food & Wine has Mouthing Off, a regularly updated blog.
