Okay, so I'm WAY behind the curve in my moving watching, but I did get around to seeing this movie this past weekend. I agree with Katie; I didn't feel like there was any kind of competition and I had to root for one woman over the other. After all, it's not a mystery as to whether or not Julia was going to get the book published!

I also agree with Katie's comment about Julie's husband; if Julie needed to learn anything it was to value herself for what she did contribute to those around her, and not to feel less than anyone else (for any reason).

I thought the entire cast was good and I enjoyed the film. The little unexpected nuggets I enjoyed were Jane Lynch as Julia's sister and the relationship between Julia and her penpal extrodinairre. Those were sweet relationships.

I really loved both women, and what I liked about them is that they both found something they truly enjoyed doing and went after it. "Be fearless." Maybe because I'm 25 and still looking for my niche, I find this more appealing than most. All the same, I don't see why I must automatically root for one woman or the other. I didn't view it as a competition. And what I got from the husband's comment was that Julie couldn't control what Julia or anyone else felt about her project--she could only enjoy what she personally experienced, and if that's something she was proud of, she shouldn't let someone (even Julia Child) make her feel any less about her achievement.

I agree - the book speaks to people, both women and men of multiple generations, for a wide array of reasons. It's iconic.
I loved reading My Life in France for Julia's own take on the long, long process of getting the book written, edited, and finally published. I love that lady!

Really interesting take. In a way it's easy for me to forget that there's a real person walking around in the world who wrote my cookbook. I don't think I ever really thought about it before.
