Speaking at the World People's Conference on Climate Change in Cochabamba, Bolivia, Bolivian president Evo Morales declared his position on genetically modified foods; that is, that he believes they cause baldness and homosexuality in men. Though his announcement that "the chicken we eat is loaded with female hormones. So, when men eat it, they tend to deviate from their manhood" was met with laughter, it's unclear whether he was aiming for humor. President Morales also informed the crowd that half of Europe is bald due to dependence on hormone-laced food, and that in 50 years, half the world will be bald. While we knew it was ethically questionable, whoda thunk bioengineering was responsible a worldwide hair-loss conspiracy? [via @LisaAbend]

This is just a stupid remark and deserves no other attention paid to it.

  2. Innernet Dude

Expect reactionaries to attack Morales for this, calling him a homophobe or whatever.

I'm a little confused here - is he saying that GMOs make men bald and gay (meaning that all gay men are bald, and vice versa), or is he saying that it will be one or the other (as in, men can be either gay or bald, but not both)? This is Very Important Information that we all need him to clarify.

Also, what about women who eat GMOs? Does it make us more girly-girls because of the overdose of female hormones, or does it turn us into bald, butch Amazons, ready to take over the world, including the presidency of Bolivia?

And what about people whose hair is thinning, but not bald? Are they bi, or just gay-curious? Is there still time for them to turn back to the path of Righteous Straightness? And if a GMO-eating kid masturbates, does that mean he won't grow hair on his palms?

Like I said: these are Important Questions, and America demands that President Morales provide us with the answers!

Well Innernet Dude. Saying homophobic things will get you labeled a homophobe. Crazy I know.

  5. "While we knew [GMO food} was ethically questionable..."

Yeah, increasing food yields for lower price and decreasing pesticide usage is ethically questionable. What are you talking about?

This is some Dr. Strangelove style stuff.

  7. BBQ guy,

    Genetically modified organisms spread.

And when they spread they can dislodge species that have spent millions of years building genetic diversity which makes them resilient.

They can alter ecological relationships, like the relationship with Bee's

They can also be used by companies to create a stranglehold on seed sales (sterile seeds etc).

Haven't you heard of American corn farmers being sued by Monsanto because thier crops were infected with GM corn?

There are many other issues. Perhaps you should read more.
